Hawaii's Masons Training Program, affiliated with community colleges throughout the islands, involves more than learning to lay brick, work with plaster and finish cement. The apprentices gain confidence, self-esteem and pride in their craft. "In apprenticeship training," says Training Coordinator Peter Iriarte, "young people learn the traditional skills so that they know the history of their craft."
